A new first – THRUSH!

Thrush!

When you are a mom of 3, many times you think that you have been through most of your “firsts.” But a few weeks ago I encountered another one that wasn’t as amazing as most firsts are. A new first for me – Thrush! My youngest (10 months) had a nasty case and his tongue was white and and patchy. He didn’t want to eat or do a whole lot.  I was leaving for Chicago in a few days, and it’s hard enough leaving dad alone with 3 kids to fend for himself but for one of them to also be sick, OOOFF!

You get it moms.

I have to be home to replace the empty toilet paper roll, put the clothes in the dryer, and do most things kid related so I really needed my little one to be better before I left.  I needed to get him well and quick! I also breastfeed so I didn’t want the infection to spread to my nipples, eww!

Thrush

I was surprised that I was able to provide him comfort from thrush within 48 hours.

Full disclosure I am not a doctor, but I am a certified health practitioner with a background in natural health. (As always, you should check with your child’s pediatrician with any health concerns).

Supplies I used:

Colloidal Silver Mouth Spray 4 – 5x daily

Baby’s Paste:

Coconut Oil

Clove Essential Oil (I only use Do Terra brand essential oils as not all essential oils are safe for ingestion)

Lavender Essential Oil 1 drop

Lemon Essential Oil 1 drop

Thyme Essential Oil 1 drop

Tea Tree Essential oil 1 drop

Essential Oils for Thrush

Mom’s Paste:

Baking Soda

Coconut Oil

I sprayed 2 pumps of the colloidal silver mouth spray in his mouth 4 to 5 times a day. This was easy, I showed him by spraying it in my mouth first, then he let me spray his. He treated it as if we were playing a game and colloidal silver has no taste. I was able to find some pretty easily from the Vitamin Shoppe.

Make a paste out of the remaining ingredients.

I took 1⁄8 teaspoon of coconut oil, and mashed it on a small plate with 1 drop each of the following doTerra essential oils:

Clove Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Thyme Essential Oil

Once my paste was well mixed I applied it to his tongue and gums with my finger (with freshly washed hands), since he has been teething he likes chewing on my fingers anyway. It obviously tasted horrible as you can imagine, and likely burned his tongue a little because that are potent oils and they were battling a fungus in his mouth. I let it sit for about 30 seconds then I nursed him to calm him and wash away the flavors of the essential oils.

I applied this paste several times a day –  every time I was about to nurse.

For myself,  I mixed together baking soda and coconut oil and applied to my nipples every time I was about to nurse him as well to help prevent spreading thrush to me, but also because that would get the mix in his mouth and I had read that baking soda and coconut oil would help battle the candida yeast that is thrush. Lastly, a few times a day I mixed together a 1⁄2 teaspoon of coconut oil and tea tree oil and massaged onto the bottoms of his feet.

Happy Baby

Honestly having this be the first time I had ever taken care of a baby with thrush and I had no idea if this would work or not, but I just hit it with the best known antifungal natural remedies I was aware of. Sure enough I left my hubby with a healthy baby when I got on my flight.
